Photographer Marc Bushelle isn't just making beautiful photos, he's empowering his daughter, and thousands of other young girls, with every snap.

Bushelle was inspired to create photos of his 5-year-old daughter dressed as important black women in history when his wife, Janine Harper, came across another photographer who created a similar photo series.

"We thought that this would be a good thing to adapt to teach black history and empower our little girl," Bushelle told Mashable. In his series, he set out to focus on educating both his daughter, Lily, and anyone who viewed the photos specifically about black history, depicting famous women such as Toni Morrison, Grace Jones and Dr. Mae Jemison.

The first in the series was aviator Bessie Coleman, which Bushelle says is Lily's favorite photo. He, however, couldn't possibly choose. "They are almost like my babies and they are all special in their own way," he said.

Initially, Bushelle wanted to run the series online specifically for Black History Month, but after such positive feedback from friends and fans on social media, he decided to continue the series.

"There are other women whose lives we would like to introduce to our daughter. Black History should not be only for February. We feel that this kind of education should happen all year round," he said.

Bushelle posts new photos to his photography page on Facebook. His other work can also be found on his website.
