BBX will begin powering new BlackBerry smartphones and tablets (as well as systems available in, say, your car) by next year. Lazardis promises the forthcoming OS will combine the best of QNX, the operating system it purchased last year, with the BlackBerry OS that currently powers its smartphones.

BBX will support all WebWorks and HTML5 apps being designed for current BlackBerry devices, as well as software created using development tools for the BlackBerry PlayBook (including Native SDK, Adobe AIR/Flash and WebWorks/HTML5) and BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps. The platform will also support 2D and 3D gaming, as well as what it calls "Super App" capabilities, which will allow for deeper integration between apps, always-on Push services, the BBM Social Platform and more.
