Severe bleaching event is damaging parts of the Great Barrier Reef like never before

Australia has announced the "worst mass bleaching event" in the northern parts of the Great Barrier Reef. Coral bleaching occurs when waters reach certain temperatures, causing corals to expel algae. The cause is a combination of an El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean and human-caused global warming.
