I first caught wind of Blist during DEMO last month, and the still-in-private-beta site has raised $6.5 million in Series A investment just weeks after its debut. Led by Frazier Technology Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures, the funding will go towards the further development and the marketing of its social database service. Frazier general partner Scott Darling and Morgenthaler partner Ken Gullicksen have also joined the Blist board of directors.
At first glance, the term social database sounds either boring or daunting--but really it's just a fancy way to say that Blist is a way-cooler service for making spreadsheets. I got a chance to try it out on my own, before meeting face to face with the Blist team. As you can tell from my screen shot on the initial Blist post, I couldn't find too many ways in which to use the service on my first shot.
That's mostly my fault, as I seldom have cause for creating spreadsheets of any kind, no matter how cool they look. But after meeting with the Blist team and getting a deeper look at what Blist is capable of, I realized that Blist isn't only for making spreadsheets, but it's a multimedia, interactive way of organizing your data.
