Severe weather rolled through the Northeast on Tuesday, pummeling several states and dropping a rare hailstorm in the Boston area, including downtown. Golfball-sized hailstones fell across the area along with heavy rain and winds.

According to local news reports, the storms downed trees and knocked out power to around tens of thousands of customers across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A local even reported a rain-wrapped tornado sighting but the National Weather Service told WCVB it could not confirm the sighting; there were tornado warnings for counties to the northwest of Boston.

While summer is thunderstorm season for New England, a significant hailstorm in downtown Boston is rare. That city is a bit weather traumatized after experiencing its snowiest winter on record, so getting slammed with giant stones of ice in the summertime may not have been particularly welcome.
