LONDON -- There's proposing to your girlfriend, and then there's this.

Cornwall-based plumber Mike Wakefield took creative proposals to a whole new level recently, when he decorated the sand of a beach in Newquay with this gigantic artwork.

It's not every day you get to ask the woman you #love to marry you. I had to do something special for sure! #shesaidyes #love #beachart #beach #art #wedding #Newquay #Cornwall A photo posted by Mike Wakefield (@mikewakefield1080) on Jul 13, 2015 at 4:37am PDT

Wakefield had to wait until the tide was out to start work on the drawing, which took almost two hours to complete.

"The hardest part was the timing as I had to work with the tides, work shifts and the weather to try to get everything matched up," he said. "I had been checking the tides for a couple of months but each time it was right, she was at work or the weather was bad."

Wakefield said he was confident his partner, India Stevens, would say yes, but he was still really nervous.

Stevens described the proposal as "a massive surprise."

"My mum rang me the day before asking if I wanted to go for a walk with her to the doctors in the morning," she said. "We did not even get to the beach when I saw Mike, who was supposed to be at work."

"I then looked at the sand and saw the proposal and asked Mike if he had done it.

"He is really creative so I knew it was him. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him."

The beach proposal led to Wakefield being interviewed on BBC Radio Cornwall, and the story has had an overwhelmingly positive response.

"I am India's father and loved the effort Mike went to," wrote David Stevens in a comment on BBC Radio Cornwall's Facebook page.

Wakefield and Stevens are now planning a beach-themed wedding.

"We moved to Cornwall to be by the beach, so it is only fitting we got engaged and plan to get married there," he said.
