Traveling to the world's most historic sites via virtual reality is still not very common, but a rich interactive peek inside one of the UK's most exclusive structures proves that VR tours are definitely the future.

"Buckingham Palace Expedition" takes viewers on a 360-degree exploration of the royal residence's interior, led by guides who reveal some of its secrets.

Master of the Household to the Sovereign Vice Admiral Charles Anthony Johnstone-Burt invites viewers into the palace in one what turns out to be a surprisingly intimate look at the home of the Queen of England.

Joining Johnstone-Burt on the virtual tour is Anna Reynolds, the palace's official curator of paintings, who peels back the royal glamour and uses the VR environment to pull viewers deeper into the structure's history.

The virtual tour is part of Google's Expeditions program, which travels the globe to find important locations that can be brought to life remotely through 360-degree videography.

Buckingham Palace has offered static image virtual access to the building since as far back as 2013, but this guided video virtual tour truly raises the experience to a new level. If you've never thought of traveling to the royal palace, this virtual tour will make you want to visit.

This past December, Google offered a similar virtual reality tour of the White House, also hosted by the historians offering a deeper look into the history of the site.

To view the tour you can use either the YouTube app on your smartphone or check it out by playing the video (above), which is interactive.
