As beautifully designed as the latest batch of smartphones are, they're missing one thing -- individuality. If you are a crafty type and would like a one-of-a-kind cellphone, check out this DIY cellphone kit from MIT's Media Lab.

Just pop in a SIM card and it's ready to use. At about $150 for the parts (plus free printouts for the circuit board and covers from GitHub) you can have DIY bragging rights over your iPhone-mad friends.

If you want text messaging capabilities, however, you'll have to code that into the software yourself.

DIY is not just for home projects. Check out the other instructional videos we've featured, which show you how to construct your own WiFi hotspot using a coffee can and assemble an animatronic 3D printed hand.

Or maybe you're more interested in creating a Tron light cycle or making musical Jello.

The DIY cellphone kit isn't MIT's only contribution to self-sufficient tech living. The university can also shown you how to build our own robot.
