Here's the value of niche social networks: not the number of users, but the high concentration of members interested in certain products.

Hence, Takkle can pull a few strings with Tampax, Dogster can sell dog related ads at the equivalent of massive CPMs, and mommy social network CafeMom is set to host a campaign next month for Playskool, producer of games for toddlers. Playskool will send toy kits to at least 2,500 CafeMom members to get feedback and hopefully sell even more through word of mouth.

The only way for MySpace to serve such targeted campaigns would be to gather more detailed info on their users, something they plan to do through the purchase of Strategic Data Corp.
