Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is definitely coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. But it's a significantly slimmer release on those older gaming machines.

The PS3/X360 versions of the game won't include any form of story mode, Activision confirms. The competitive multiplayer and cooperative Zombies modes are both there, but that's it. The story in Black Ops 3 is a no-show.

Activision cites hardware limitations as the reason for the omission. "The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player coop Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware," the announcement reads.

It's not the only absence. The trimmed-down version of Black Ops 3 also ditches the Weapon Paint Shop and esports tools that will be available with the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Here too, it sounds like aging hardware is the issue.

To compensate for the feature downgrade, Activision has confirmed that the PS3/X360 versions of Black Ops 3 will include a bonus download code for the original Call of Duty: Black Ops. The whole package will sell for $49.99, slashing $10 off the price of the more full-featured release.
