When photographer Mark Cox's 10-year-old daughter Sarah was diagnosed with acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), father and daughter made the most of the situation. They collaborated on a series of photos titled "Strong" to document Sarah's fight.
Although she was in remission after a month of medical care, she continued treatment for another three years. Today, 13-year-old Sarah is back to health.
Cox has launched a Kickstarter to support a final piece of artwork based on the photos.
"Sarah's the one who came up with the idea for the project. She always has final input as to which photos I use," Cox told Mashable. "She's excited that people might be inspired by her story and also that childhood leukemia (particularly ALL) is getting some attention."
1. "Just Hangin' Around" shows Sarah on her grandparents' trampoline. Although she was in pain at the time, she did not know she was sick.
2. "Hope" was taken the day before Sarah received her diagnosis.
3. "Rocking the Pain Away" is from one of Sarah's chemo sessions. She chose to wear bandanas instead of wigs throughout her illness.
4. In "Covered Head," Sarah is wrapped in her father's bathrobe to stay warm.
5. "Sarah to the Rescue" takes place at a party thrown by her oncology group. She is wearing a back brace to stabilize her nine spinal fractures, caused by ALL. Sarah, a budding photographer, says this photo is her favorite.
6. "Rescuing Sarah" shows Sarah, an animal lover, cuddling with a golden retriever at the hospital.
7. "Fall's A-Fallin'" was snapped in Sarah's backyard towards the end of her chemo sessions.
8. "Coming Around Full Circle" shows Sarah returning to health.
9. In "Just Hangin' Around," Sarah is healthy again and ecstatic to celebrate on the trampoline.
