UPDATED: Monday, Nov. 30 at 2.20 p.m. AEDT: NSW Police have confirmed they burnt the seized cannabis.

A patch of grass is about to land someone in trouble -- a football field-sized amount of trouble.

Australian police have seized more than 8,500 cannabis plants, bordered by a 150 metre-long by 50 metre-wide fence (164 yards by 54.6 yards) on the New South Wales north coast. As the Daily Telegraph pointed out, that's bigger than the Sydney Football Stadium, or larger than a soccer field.

To add insult to injury, NSW Police confirmed to Mashable Australia all of the cannabis plants were burnt in what must have been a hell of a bonfire.

In a statement, NSW Police said the crops were discovered by police officers and park staff off a secluded walking trail in Bundjalung National Park on Nov. 11. There's been no word on who had the dedication and enthusiasm for hiking to pull this off.

The mostly juvenile plants carried a whopping street value of A$8.6 million (US6.2 million).

According to NSW Police, more than 12,500 cannabis plants with a street value of more than A$12 million (US$8.6 million) have been seized over three weeks.

During raids that took place between Nov. 23 to Nov. 26, 4,000 cannabis crops were found by air and by local officers in eight locations.

The raids are part of the NSW Police's Cannabis Eradication Program, which has been in place since the 1980's, with the bulk of operations occurring in cannabis-growing season in late spring to early autumn.

In this case, someone got weeded out in a big way before summer even started.
