Camera makers are obsessed with nostalgia. With smartphones eating their lunch, looking to the past for inspiration when designing new digital cameras is, perhaps, the only way to go.
With zero fanfare, Canon, updated its online website Monday with the PowerShot G5 X, a high-end point-and-shoot camera that mixes modern-day camera flourishes with film camera touches.
The Canon G5 X packs a high-resolution 20-megapixel 1-inch sensor and f/1.8 aperture lens. This one-two punch sensor size and wide aperture has proved to be a winning combination for Sony and its RX100 point-and-shoot series.
The G5 X comes with a Digic 6 image processor, 4.2x optical zoom lens and touchscreen that flips out. There's also a built-in flash, hot-shoe for attachments and a 2.36-million dot electronic viewfinder.
Dial-lovers will find three dials on the camera: one on the front (right next to the grip), one on the top, one on the back and a control ring on the lens.
Canon's website also lists HD video recording as a feature, but not full HD, which means it's stuck with 720p resolution.
The PowerShot G5 X will be available for $799.99. A release date wasn't listed on Canon's website.
