Warning: This post contains spoilers about the latest episode of Castle.

'Till death do us part? Not exactly.

More like 'till the threat of death do us part -- at least for Castle and Beckett, who in the latest episode of the ABC cop drama called it quits.

Much to the devastation of the show's fans.

The move comes after a heart-pounding episode that filled in many of the holes about Beckett's whereabouts in the season premiere.

In sum: There was another conspiracy. But this time, the conspiracy brought Castle's super spy step-mother Rita out of hiding.

Castle still doesn't know about his step-mother's appearance. But she proved valuable to Kate, who had a lot of trouble staying alive during this episode. (She was even shot, and stitched herself up like a boss.)

In the end, Kate made it out alive, of course. The same can't be said for Assistant AG Allison Hyde, who killed herself after it was discovered that she was part of the conspiracy.

Hyde's death brought some comfort for those who had been endangered during the hunt -- but not Beckett. Under the cover of darkness, Beckett met again with Castle's step-mom, who confirmed her suspicions that Hyde was a simple pawn in a much bigger game.

The bad people were "still out there," Rita said -- but Kate's assignment was clear. "You are going to go home to that good-looking husband of yours," she instructed.

Kate resisted. She couldn't rest easy knowing there's so much more to this story. "I thought I put it all behind me, but it's back, and it's stronger than ever," Kate said.

"You have to try," Rita said. "Don't end up like me." Plus, Rita added, "attachments are liabilities." If Kate went after the bad guys, she would only be putting those she loves in danger.

"That blood is on you," Rita said.

This hit Kate hard. Because it was the truth.

So she made the decision to leave Castle.

And he just stood there and let her walk away?????? #Castle— Christy Spratlin (@ChristySpratlin) September 29, 2015

Kate packed a bag, and dropped the bomb on him while he was making breakfast for dinner. He never saw it coming.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I love you so much."

"I need to figure some things out so we can have our happily ever after," she added.

Castle was crushed and confused. "Why are you giving up on our marriage?" he asked.

Her answer? "I'm trying to save it."

Castle tried again: "If you have a problem, we have a problem. That's how this works," he told her.

Kate wouldn't hear it, and asked for his trust. "I hope you'll have room in your heart to take me back ... forgive me," she said, grabbing her bag and walking out the door.

This, no doubt, is not the end for Castle and Beckett. After all, they've survived so much together.

Still, what just happened?
