While there are a million thoughts running through the minds of college football players competing in the BCS Championship Game, there's only one thing running through the minds of brands during the game: How to score big on social media with timely tweets.
Major sporting events that bring millions of people to their TV screens and Twitter feeds offer a great platform for brands to win popularity points on social media, as last year's Super Bowl demonstrated.
Monday night's BCS Championship Game between Florida State University and Auburn University was no different, and a select few brands capitalized on the magnitude of the event.
The game was incredibly close and featured several lead changes, which Charmin used to its advantage.
Wow. We have a feeling there are lots of college football fans about to sheet their pants right about now..— Charmin (@Charmin) January 7, 2014
Yup. We're gonna go there. Holy. Sheet. This game is INSANE.— Charmin (@Charmin) January 7, 2014
The game was also the last championship game under the current BCS structure, which will expand next year to more closely resemble an NFL playoff framework. Denny's helped say goodbye to the old BCS in its own way.
Out with the old BCS and in with the new. And lemme tell ya, the new is good. Really good. Taste-wise at least. pic.twitter.com/XNqzVfzBLj— Denny's (@DennysDiner) January 7, 2014
Denny's also used Photoshop to play off Auburn's famed picture cards, which they use to call plays from the sidelines.
Guaranteed score. That play works every time. #BCSChampionship pic.twitter.com/T8bm2lPCSB— Denny's (@DennysDiner) January 7, 2014
Last but not least, Denny's took on the difficult task of comforting a defeated Auburn team with a long journey back home.
If it's any consolation Auburn fans, there are 47 chances to win on the way home. #BCSChampionship #BCS pic.twitter.com/2HZbH3kpsY— Denny's (@DennysDiner) January 7, 2014
And, of course, BCS sponsors Taco Bell were not going to miss out on last night's Twitter fun.
Always a good call. #BCSChampionship pic.twitter.com/0Necax77qL— Taco Bell (@TacoBell) January 7, 2014
