New President, New Googlebomb: “Cheerful Achievement”

Perhaps the most infamous Googlebomb (an effort to inflate a website’s search ranking for a particular term) was “miserable failure,” which for a time, placed the official White House homepage of George W. Bush atop the search results for the term. Less than a week into the Barack Obama administration, a new Googlebomb has dropped, but with a more positive connotation: “cheerful achievement.”

According to Google Blogscoped, entering that search term yielded Obama’s official White House page as the top result earlier today, though it has since been supplanted by articles discussing the Googlebomb. What makes Googlebomb’s more fun (or impactful anyhow) is that when you enter the term on the Google homepage and click “I’m feeling lucky,” it takes you directly to the first result for the search term.

Google claims to have lessened the impact of Googlebombs, which probably explains in part why The White House page has already fallen towards the bottom of the first page of results for “Cheerful Achievement.” Additionally, Google’s search algorithm is currently rumored to put more weight towards timely content, which helps explain the quick rise of blog posts about the bomb.
