Thousands have been left stranded and thousands more rescued from their homes as heavy rains have pounded the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, causing a crisis in the city of Chennai.

Chennai, with a population of more than 6 million, is one of the largest cities in India. Chennai received more than 13 inches of rain in a 24-hour period from Tuesday into early Wednesday, local time, which is the largest 24-hour downpour the area has seen since 1901.

The latest floods have followed months of record deluges, with the city picking up an entire year's worth of typical rainfall since Oct. 1, and more rain is in the forecast.
