Guacamole is extra, but kindness is free.

Chicago police officer Sergeant B. Hagarty stopped by a Chipotle in the city's Lakeview neighborhood for lunch last week and noticed a homeless man picking through nearby trash bins. Hagarty gestured to the man through the window, asking if he would like something to eat.

Rachel Mitchell, who witnessed the exchange and posted it on Facebook, shared what happened next.

"The cop told him to set what belongings he had next to him and told him to order what he wanted because he would pay for it," Mitchell wrote. "They stood in line together and at the end the cop paid for the man's meal. A simple hand shake was exchanged between them and they parted ways like it was no big deal."

Mitchell's photos and story of the incident were picked up by a local country music station and the Chicago PD's official Facebook page. The images have been shared more than 10,000 times, surprising Hagarty -- who didn't know anyone had captured photographs of his act of kindness.

According to the Chicago Police Department, Hagarty plans to retire before the end of the year.
