Syfy has released a trailer and date for its next project: an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's classic science fiction novel Childhood's End. The trailer, showcasing shockingly high production values for the network that brought us the Sharknado series, goes globe-trotting to introduce us to a new threat from outer space.

Originally published in 1953, Clarke's novel describes the peaceful takeover of Earth by an alien race who promise an end to all war, disease, and hunger -- as long as humanity agrees to abide by their rules. Confusing matters further, their leader, an enigmatic figure voiced by Game of Thrones star Charles Dance, refuses to let himself be seen by the humans he rules. The mystery of the alien's identity is central to the novel, and director Nick Hurran has pledged to remain faithful to Clarke's vision of the aliens.
