Artist Mike Lowery may work mostly for kids (which is to say, he draws books for them), but he's become popular for taking his drawings to Instagram to teach random facts to a wider audience.

Lowery is a children's book illustrator and self-described constant sketchbooker who posts a regular series of "random illustrated facts." Topics range from twins who were born several months apart, to how much penguin urine can be found in glaciers (read on for the answer; you know you're curious).

The facts started out as simple warmup routines. They weren't designed with kids in mind, but for a general all-ages audience, sort of like Pixar films. So you begin to see some unusual things turn up.

"As they started getting a following I started thinking they'd be not for kids, but not NOT for kids," Lowery told Mashable.

"I just keep digging for facts until I find something that I think is really funny or weird or would make a good drawing," Lowery said. "Sometimes the 'digging' stage takes two minutes, sometimes it takes 45."

Now that the facts have taken off, there's a planned book in the works that will collect them all. It won't be only a children's book, though. Just a book.

Here's some more learnin':

Lowery also posts his Random Illustrated Facts to Tumblr.
