How to pull off a choker in 2016

Today's hottest jewelry trend is sexy, edgy and old AF.Choker's aren't new. It seems as soon as women learned how to tie knots they were wrapping strips of leather, lace and satin around their necks. But just because a style is ancient doesn’t mean it’s off the table. Some of the necklaces that were popular among royals in the 1700s are still worn by today's it-girl elite.
Here we are in 2016. Whether you like them or not, chokers are back. For some, the necklace conjures memories that are better left buried — yin yangs, smiley faces and awkward middle school years. They’ve sworn off the style, never to let it enter their wardrobes again. Others admire the way chokers look on the cool girls but don’t think they can pull off the trend personally. That doesn’t have to be the case. With a few styling tips, anyone can work a choker into their look, making this old-school accessory modern and fresh.
For a streamlined look you can wear to work, stick with thin and delicate silhouettes. Wear the tightest piece high on your neck, allowing the other complementing jewelry to drape effortlessly below.
Swap your color changing mood stones for gems in solid shades. Juxtapose the more demure styles by adding thick solid pieces to add balance.
If velvet and lace aren’t for you, try a gunmetal choker encrusted with pave crystal. Layer a subtler necklace underneath. Look for an option in a contrasting color to ensure the combo isn’t too harsh.
Give the classic ‘90s velvet choker a dose of millennial edge. Paired with a thin wrap necklace and metallic bondage piece, the look is a “Major Key” rather than an “As If.”
