Christmas Day App Downloads Hit 328 Million, Setting New Record

Christmas Day is typically the biggest day of the year for new device activations and this year was no exception, according to researcher Flurry Analytics.

Consumers activated 17.4 million devices on Christmas Day this year, shattering last year's record of 6.8 million device activations. Meanwhile, the number of app downloads on Christmas Day hit 328 million, according to Flurry Analytics, which claims to keep tabs on 90% of all daily iOS and Android activations and 260,000 apps.

The app figure compares to 242 million app downloads for Christmas Day 2011. As the chart below shows, the Christmas Day average for activations was more than three times the standard for the month of December:

App downloads were also up 112% on Christmas Day vs. the rest of the month:

Finally, apparently a lot of people had tablets under their Christmas trees, as shown by the following chart:

Flurry expects the accelerated app downloads to continue through the following week, which may result in a new annual record for app downloads: 2 billion.
