At first glance, these images look like paintings reminiscent of 19th century Impressionist art.

But a closer look at the series, titled "San Francisco Impressions", reveals carefully layered photographs that capture bustling scenes around the California city artist Christopher Dydyk calls home. It's the unique editing process that gives his photographs their rich and ghostly qualities.

Dydyk told Mashable that although he believes traditional photography is beautiful, it "lacks the multidimensionality to fully express the sensations of energy and joy" that he feels while taking in San Francisco's scenery. To better capture these feelings, the photographer snaps his city scenes from all possible angles before digitally layering his images into one photograph.

Though Dydyk initially focused his work on the city's nature, he quickly turned his lens "to capturing the people and vivid energy that fill and make up San Francisco."
