"Later, when time had gone all gluey and mutable, Keith would wonder: had it really only been three months since he'd been ordered to wait in the wrecked entryway of that house on East Third? And also: why hadn't he obeyed?"

So writes Garth Risk Hallberg in his 2015 tour de force City on Fire.

The novel follows a cast of characters -- teenage punks, gay artists, wealthy heirs, a detective and a reporter, just to name a few -- as they navigate New York City in the '60s and '70s. When a New Year's Eve shooting leaves one local teen in a coma, these seemingly disparate characters find themselves suddenly connected as each tries to solve this violent mystery.

Moving and beautiful, City on Fire explores what happens when the walls we put up suddenly come crashing down.
