Mario Paint was a 1992 Nintendo release for the SNES that allowed players to draw simple pictures and make custom stamps, one pixel at a time.
Users could also make music by using these stamp icons -- planes, boats, cars, or Mario himself -- to represent music notes from different instruments.
Years later, unFun Games released a free, standalone program called Mario Paint Composer, which amped up the musical aspects of the original.
The resulting game allows for the creation of simple melodies, ideal for kids playing around and getting their first taste of music. It's also ideal for obsessive fans who can devote dozens of hours to recreating brilliant and intricate facsimiles of, say, the Doug theme song.
Hours of entertainment await you on YouTube, but we've collected some of the highlights here.
