I came across a real slick mashup early this morning, elegant in it's simplicity and utility, and without Google-assisting my memory, appears to be a fairly original application of what should be a fairly obvious idea. Simply put, Gumiyo is what happens when you take a classifieds system like Craigslist, and tailor it to work on a text messaging platform.
They bubbled up in the feeds because the Los Angeles based company says it raised a second round of venture financing, although they didn't specify the amount. Regardless, though, the service works as a mobile online marketplace that uses cell phones to connect live buyers and sellers. With your mobile, you can capture images or video of an item, attach the image to a text message, and send them to Gumiyo where the item will be listed. Gumiyo then takes your listings and puts them on other Web sites including Froogle Google Product Search and Oodle, amongst others.
Buyers can also search and browse items from their mobile as well as receive alerts or emails when new items become available. When a match is made through the system, buyers and sellers can contact one another directly through a mobile-to-mobile connection, SMS or email.
