The films will air during prime time on CNN -- which has seen viewership significantly dip in 2012 -- and CNN International, with some flicks potentially hitting theaters and film festivals.
CNN Films has acquired Girl Rising (watch the trailer below) as its first movie, and secured development deals with acclaimed directors Alex Gibney and Andrew Rossi.
Girl Rising will air in spring 2013 and show the impact of improving education for girls in countries such as India, Peru, Haiti, Ethiopia and Cambodia. Actresses Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington and Selena Gomez lend their voices to the film, directed Richard Robbins
Other films will look at economic, social and political topics. Programs before and after the prime-time broadcasts of every documentary will further examine each film's purpose and content.
“CNN Films will bring distinguished, thought-provoking documentary programming to our global audiences on all our television, online and mobile platforms,” Mark Whitaker, managing editor of CNN Worldwide, said in a statement announcing CNN Films, which will lead by Vinnie Malhotra and Amy Entelis.
