Tuck your pants into your shoes, because this is a race with one of Australia's most terrifying creepy crawlies.

The Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane, Queensland hosted their 35th annual "Cockroach Race" on Australia Day, Jan. 26, in what's become a much anticipated tradition on the public holiday.

Entrants can either bring their own cockroach or purchase one for A$5 (US$3.50), although with the summer heat Down Under it shouldn't be difficult to find one lurking in the kitchen. Don't think about bringing your flying cockroaches, because they aren't permitted.

To kick off the race, the roaches are released from a small bucket. The ugly bugs then scramble to the outer-circle finish line with mad punters cheering on their chosen one. When the race is over, entrants cease ownership as the roaches scurry away.

The race, according to legend, started 35 years ago following an argument by two pub customers about who had the biggest and fastest roaches in their suburb.

More than three decades on, it seems they are no closer to the answer.
