College brings graduation to hospital after woman gives birth early

Juliet Smith was unable to attend her graduation ceremony from Guilford College on Friday, but her school made sure that she received her very own commencement ceremony.

The pregnant college senior's due date wasn't until June 9, but her baby Milo made an unexpectedly early entrance into the world on May 15 at 11:57 p.m., just two hours after her water broke at a local restaurant.

The premature birth forced Smith, who majored in English and minored in German, to miss her graduation ceremony, but according to a news release from the college, "her classmates roared when her name was read."

After the real graduation ceremony, a few faculty members visited Smith and her newborn at the hospital to perform a shortened and personal graduation for the new mom.

"It means so much that the Guilford community would do this for me,” Smith said in the news release. “It really just affirms that Guilford was the right college for me.”

Although everything worked out in the end, Smith admitted that she was initially very upset with her son's timing.

“I was so mad at him," Smith said. "And then I was upset with myself, because I didn’t want my first feeling toward my first son to be anger, but I’d been so excited to be a part of commencement for so long.”

Even though Milo was born three weeks early, the boy is healthy and weighed in at 5 pounds 14 ounces at birth.
