College Tonight, which launches on September 15th, is a social network for college and graduate students focused on socializing and nightlife. Just like Facebook, StudentFace and Univillage, only those with a qualifying email address (.edu in this case) can get access. The Los Angeles-based company consists of a Emory University graduate, a finance executive, a marketing specialist and a computer sciences expert, and the aim is to serve up the latest nightlife information and special discounts for students. They're also focusing on safety and privacy - something that seems doubly important after the Facebook Facelift, the backlash and Mark Zuckerberg's apology. As part of those safety efforts, the team claim to have former FBI agent John Douglas as their safety advisor - he's also written a message for users in the site's security section.
The site is great to use and the design is slick, but it remains to be seen whether there's a market for it. Facebook already provides a basic events feature, and convincing students to try yet another social network might be a tough job. So while I'm a fan of the service, I don't know if College Tonight will be able to attract a devoted user base.
