Comic Sans has long been the red-headed stepchild of the font world.

But one artist says the typeface may not be as bad as everyone thinks. Pittsburgh-based artist Jesse England created the Sincerity Machine, a typewriter that only types in Comic Sans, to prove his point.

England insists that the much-maligned font is simply misunderstood. “It’s a mark of sincerity from those who do not have graphic design experience," he says in the video, above. "I’m not particularly enamored with this font, but I don’t think it deserves the flack it gets.”

England says he took a "70s-era" Sears-branded Brother Charger 11 typewriter, and created new letters using a laser engraver. He then glued the new letters onto the typewriter's strikers, and designed new Comic Sans covers for the keys.

England claims the project is not a viral marketing campaign. Instead, the artist says on his website, "As part of my ongoing thesis of questioning how we create, consume, store (and fetishize) media, it's my wish that a classic, functioning typewriter altered to write in the most popularly despised font of modern times will provoke thoughts about such media concerns."

Judging by the video's YouTube comments, which range from downright horrified to congratulatory, it seems England has accomplished his goal.
