Websites that let you find places to crash not only provide a free bed (or floor) for travelers to sleep on, but are also gateways into new cultures. Hosts can act simply as landlords or as personal guides in unfamiliar lands. And these networks are rapidly growing; CouchSurfing.org has a membership of more than 10 million globally in 200,000 different cities, according to its website.

Photographer Malte Jäger made several journeys to document various hospitality networks, following individuals and groups of friends in different areas of the world and using different modes of transportation.
