In India, cows are revered by the majority Hindu population.

Earlier this year, the government of the state of Maharashtra banned the slaughter of cows and the possession of beef in the state. The ban prevents people from selling their aging cows to slaughterhouses, causing an issue of what to do with older cows. Cow retirement homes have become an increasingly popular destination for aging cows.

An estimated 25,000 cow shelters around India provide cattle with protection from illegal slaughter and comfortable surroundings in which to spend their last years.
