Crypt of the Necrodancer doesn't just want you to slash enemies and loot their bodies. No, you need to have a sense of rhythm if you want to get anywhere in this game.

Everything in Necrodancer, which may have one of the best names in gaming, happens on the beat, so you can only explore further if you tap, tap, tap along with the beating heart metronome at the bottom of the screen. That means the dungeon's multitude of monsters are also bound by the same tempo.

Sure, you can do all this on your keyboard. But Necrodancer's creators want you also to plug in those old Dance Dance Revolution mats hiding in your closets.

The game has an endearing chiptune soundtrack that accompanies you through all the randomly generated levels. Though you'll lose all your progress once you die, the game has a lobby where you can purchase more permanent upgrades, make future dungeon runs a little bit easier.

Curse of the Necrodancer hit Steam via Early Access on Wednesday for $14.99. It plays on PC, Mac and Linux.
