Google Maps now lets you insert your own icons for marking various things on a map. With new support for custom icons, you can use any image from the web for your placemarks. A link entitled "add an icon" from the icon menu pulls up a box where you can insert the URL for your image. Google notes that PNG images with a transparent background work best, and I found this to be the case. Thumbnails can also be used as map icons. Now you can mark up your maps any way you see fit.
