Comedian Daniel Tosh is known for testing limits with jokes that may seem offensive to some, but he appears to have gone a little too far during a recent standup act and took to Twitter to apologize.

The comedian, who is known best for his show Tosh.0, responded to a Tumblr post on Tuesday that accused him of making inappropriate jokes about rape.

"Tosh then starts making some very generalizing, declarative statements about rape jokes always being funny, how can a rape joke not be funny, rape is hilarious, etc." the blogger writes.

The blogger, who admits her unfamiliarity with Tosh, also claims to have interrupted the act to let him know her disproval.

According to the post, Tosh responded by pausing briefly, then saying "Wouldn't it be funny if that girl got raped by like five guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her…"

The claims come from an anonymous Tumblr account, which Tosh says doesn't paint an entirely accurate picture. Nevertheless, Tosh used Twitter, where he has more than 6 million followers, to apologize Tuesday evening before the latest episode of his show on Comedy Central:

all the out of context misquotes aside, i'd like to sincerely apologize j.mp/PJ8bNs— daniel tosh (@danieltosh) July 10, 2012

the point i was making before i was heckled is there are awful things in the world but you can still make jokes about them. #deadbabies— daniel tosh (@danieltosh) July 10, 2012

While Tosh says his words were taken out of context, the comedian doesn't normally apologize for his coarse humor so the Twitter statement is interesting in itself.
