Today Microsoft got in on the rush to proclaim love for openness and allowing consumers to control their data, joining up with the DataPortability workgroup. With most major Web players now involved in the effort, it would seem we’re ripe for actual big changes that would in theory allow us to take our Facebook friends with us to other applications, avoid another Scoblegate, and stop requiring every new social web site to have its own logins and buddy lists. However, what actually will come of DataPortability remains to be seen, as rivals attempt to work together without jeopardizing their own business interests. Are you as skeptical as I am?
