LONDON – People refusing to take politicians seriously is not exactly anything new, but the sarcasm reached new heights on Twitter recently.

The latest bout came after David Cameron sent out a controversial tweet suggesting that the Labour party has become a threat to national security.

Cameron's official account put out the following tweet on Sunday, the day after Jeremy Corbyn was elected as the new leader of the Labour Party.

The Labour Party is now a threat to our national security, our economic security and your family's security.— David Cameron (@David_Cameron) September 13, 2015

Cameron's tweet has been favourited and retweeted thousands of times, but there was also the sense that some people weren't being entirely sincere in their responses...

Very concerned about what @David_Cameron identified as a threat to my family's security so I've blockaded the door pic.twitter.com/sWFEWiTy4W— Martin Belam (@MartinBelam) September 13, 2015

@David_Cameron please explain further - Am I safe to go to work tomorrow? I'm terrified!!!!— Max Penkethman (@penkymax) September 13, 2015

Dear @David_Cameron, I'm frightened. Do you think I'll be safe from the Labour Party in here? pic.twitter.com/GRui5UnxmX— Vikki Stone (@vikkistone) September 13, 2015

Thx for the heads up, D. Will I be safe if I wear my Pumpkin Helmet from now on. @David_Cameron pic.twitter.com/aQtUvqXphE— Paul (@bingowings14) September 13, 2015

@David_Cameron Rang my parents. Both safe, no sign of Corbyn. Thanks for the heads up! #Corbynwatchdayone— Phil Mayne (@phil_mayne) September 13, 2015

Meanwhile, some people jumped to Corbyn's defence.

@David_Cameron what you're saying this man who rides a bike and has a flask of tea with him is dangerous STFU pic.twitter.com/HivAGeA1Jf— JezWeCan (@JezWeCan) September 13, 2015

While others used Cameron's tweet against him.

@David_Cameron you're a threat to the underprivileged, disabled and all involved in the creative arts you absolute waste of energy.— Rizzle Kicks (@RizzleKicks) September 13, 2015

@David_Cameron threat to YOUR job security, you mean— Mark McAndrew (@markmcan) September 13, 2015

There is a threat right now to our country's security. The17,000 police officers already cut by @David_Cameron, with 22,000 more to go— Jack Dromey MP (@JackDromeyMP) September 13, 2015

Finally, some people thought the best response was a simple GIF.
