David Karp Tells Stephen Colbert Tumblr Won't 'Police' Porn

David Karp continued his post-Tumblr acquisition publicity tour Tuesday with his appearance on The Colbert Report.

During the six-minute interview, host Stephen Colbert asked Karp about his decision to drop out of high school, whether Yahoo purchased Tumblr for its cool factor ("I hope not," he said) and even what he would do if the National Security Agency approached him. But one answer in particular may disappoint one of Karp and Yahoo's key audiences: advertisers.

When asked about addressing the fact that Tumblr is "porn central," Karp rejected the characterization, but then noted that "it's just not something we want to police."

We've taken a pretty hard line on freedom of speech, supporting our users' creation, whatever that looks like, and it's just not something we want to police ... I don't want have to go in there to draw the line between this photo and this behind-the-scenes photo of Lady Gaga and, like, her nip.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has previously admitted that some of Tumblr's content isn't "as brand safe as what's on our site," but added Yahoo would try to work around it by giving advertisers "good tools for targeting."
