Each year there is a debate about the closed and elitist nature of what is called Davos. In order to attend, you have to be invited by a member of the World Economic Forum. This year more than ever, this seems at odds with the direction the Internet is moving in: Increasingly, it seems power is becoming decentralized through social networks and online movements. In fact, we hear that the "Occupy" movement, which has successfully leveraged social networks to get its word out, will be holding a "Camp Igloo" this year to protest income inequality.
Technology, however, is starting to get better representation at Davos. Representatives from Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Dropbox and Scribd will be there. While we're there, we'll be sharing our passion for digital innovation and social media as a way to progress us all forward -- from solving some of the world's biggest challenges through social good to reinventing industries to job creation.
Some of the key issues to be discussed this year will be reforming capitalism, job creation, environmental sustainability and energy, SOPA and technological innovation.
Mashable’s community has long been passionate about how social media can positively impact businesses and social good. And it seems like world leaders are starting to agree; this year social media will take the main stage at Davos. From panel discussions to the World Economic Forum’s own initiatives to integrate social media into the events.
Documented@Davos
Mashable will be working with Scribd on a program called Documented@Davos, where we’ll be interviewing young leaders, technology pioneers and forward-thinking organizations to share the important issues being discussed at Davos with everyone online. And we want to hear from you!
What are the most important issues that need to be addressed in 2012? Leave your thoughts in the comments and we'll bring those questions to Davos this week.
You can follow along with the hashtag #DavosDocs.
Here's the lineup of leaders who will be interviewed for Documented@Davos:
