Groundhogs might be able to predict the weather, but -- sadly -- they can't always predict their own death.

Winnipeg Willow, a groundhog at the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, was all ready for her annual 'Groundhog Day' performance. But on Saturday, just days before her big reveal, Willow passed away. It is suspected she died of old groundhog age.

Willow was a celebrity at the Rehabilitation Center where she resided. She moved to the center after breaking her leg in the wild, and stayed there after making friends with humans on staff. When not predicting the weather, Willow spent her days visiting students at a nearby school.

The province's other groundhog, Manitoba Merv, will assume duties in her absence. It's a stressful role, but pundits predict that plucky little Merv is up for it.

R.I.P. Winnipeg Willow.
