The dead will walk, but not quite as early as expected.

Dead Island 2, the next entry in the open-world zombie, beat 'em up series, has been delayed to 2016.

Developer Yager Development confirmed the delay on Twitter, noting that the original release target of spring 2015 was untenable.

"We have been looking at the game long and hard, and we have decided we didn’t reach that goal we set out to achieve quite yet," the announcement reads. "This is why we have decided to delay Dead Island 2 to 2016."

Original developer Techland kicked off the Dead Island series in 2011, delivering the original game and follow-up/spinoff Dead Island: Riptide, before moving on to work on Dying Light.

Yager, perhaps best known for its work on the thought-provoking 2K-published shooter Spec Ops: The Line, is new to the zombie series with Dead Island 2. The Germany-based studio is also currently working on the free-to-play Dreadnought, a multiplayer shooter built around giant spaceship battles.

There's no word on whether or not Dead Island 2 will be appearing at video-game trade show E3 this year. Mashable has reached out to publisher Deep Silver for comment, so stay tuned for an update.
