A charity page by Deah Barakat has raised more than $240,000 after the shooting in North Carolina that took his life on Tuesday night, alongside his wife Yusor Abu-Salha and sister-in-law Razan Abu-Salha.

The three Muslim college students left behind a legacy of kindness. After the shooting, many media platforms featured Barakat's various charity endeavors, from providing food to the Durham homeless to his participation with United Muslim Relief.

A video of Bakarat raising money to bring dental care to Syrian refugees was circulated widely, rocketing from less than 500 views on YouTube to more than 140,000 views.

Barakat, who had been a second-year dental student at University of North Carolina, was raising money for a trip to perform dentistry on Syrian refugees this summer.

Before his death Bakarat had raised around $3,000, according to Linda Sarsour, a spokeswoman for the students' memorial page, Our Three Winners. The day after the shooting donations flooded in to $21,000, surpassing Barakat's goal. As of Wednesday afternoon, the number stood at $240,000.

More than 5,000 people donated to the campaign, several of whom left messages of condolences and support.

One donor, Bob McConnaughey, wrote: "I'm so sorry it took a devastating local tragedy to make me far more aware of a devastating international tragedy."
