These images, unearthed by Chattanooga local historical organization Picnooga, were taken on the roof of the D.B. Lovemans & Co. department store in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. The photographer, Charles Gustavus Walline, was an employee of the department store and an avid amateur photographer. His subjects were apparently colleagues on their lunch breaks. In the background of the casually posed portraits is the Chattanooga Times building. The owner of the newspaper, Adolph Ochs, purchased a controlling stake in the company at the age of 19, and went on to purchase the New York Times around the time these images were taken.
