Dubbed Digg Trends, the new experimental feature launches today and will be a prominent element of the homepage experience. A trending story will be called out at the top of the page for 10 minutes at a time, with a timer counting down the minutes and seconds.

The trending story will be selected based on a high volume of diggs, comments, favorites, shares and activity, and users can then vote by digging or burying the story to determine its popularity. If the story gets enough diggs in the allotted time period it will stay on the homepage, if not users will be able to see that the trend failed.

According to Digg's blog post on the newly released featured, "The goal of Digg Trends is to put high activity stories in front of the community quickly and to present a fun new way for people to express whether they like the story or not. We only show the most basic information for each story so as to ensure that voting is as unbiased as possible."
