The two companies announced an extension to their distribution agreement Monday, one that will provide DirectTV subscribers access to Starz Online and Encore Online content.

DirecTV is planning on launching its own DirecTV Everywhere service later this year. As with TV Everywhere initiatives from Comcast, Cablevision and Dish Network, DirecTV Everywhere will give DirecTV subscribers the ability to access programming from the web and mobile devices.

As FierceCable notes, Starz is the first programmer that has been identified as one of the supplier's for DirecTV Everywhere. DirecTV Everywhere is still in beta.

The Starz partnership is notable, if only because it showcases the shifting strategies that content owners are taking when it comes to licensing content. Until February, Starz content was available to Netflix subscribers. In September, Starz announced that it would not renew its Netflix pact.

Instead, Starz has decided to sign licensing agreements for Dish Networks's Blockbuster Movie Pass service.

The battle between subscription streaming and TV Everywhere has continued to play out over the last nine months, driven in part by the success of initiatives such as HBO Go.

As a result, Netflix, Hulu and other online streaming services are investing more in original content.
