Disney to Launch Social Network for Nintendo Gamers

Disney is launching DGamer, an online community for gamers to connect with each other. It's set to launch initially in North America, in may 2008, exclusively Disney Interactive Studios Nintendo DS video games.

This community will be accessible through Nintendo DS and Disney's website. Users will be able to play each other and chat, as well as create personalized avatars, befriend other users, track high scores and vote in polls. The new community features will come at no additional charge for Disney Interactive Studios' Nintendo DS games that will be launched. Some of these games will be "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," "Spectrobes II" and "Hannah Montana 3." With these games, users will also be able to customize the game-theme backgrounds, game items and avatar costumes.

As this is still a Disney product, there will be some parental controls as well. Parents will be able to exchange "true friends" codes with trusted users to enable chat. This is a bit of a departure from Disney's other attempts at an integrated social network. Even Disney's XTreme Digital community is still a very closed community. Other online communities for gamers include WeeWar, and Kongregate.
