Bright flames will light up small earthen lamps across the world as millions gather this week to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.

The festival is a major holiday for Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs. Although each religion has its own interpretation of Diwali’s importance, it is generally a time of affirming kindness and new beginnings.

During the five days of the festival, people pray to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Many also celebrate by setting off fireworks, lighting earthen lamps called diyas, and exchanging sweets. The main day of celebration is Nov. 11.
