Everything is better with duct tape, especially your back to school supplies.

If you're planning on downsizing your textbook load this year, an iPad or tablet is a great way to go. Of course, one drawback of getting a fancy device is that they can cost you a pretty penny even without all the special accessories you need to keep it looking shiny and new.

Luckily, there are DIY ways to keep your tech protected from the harsh elements. Just grab some rolls of duct tape and let your imagination run wild.

Duct Tape, several colors

Patterned fabric

Cushioned shelf liner

Scissors

Self-adhesive velcro

Your iPad

Measure your cushioned shelf liner by laying your iPad horizontally about 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric. Depending on the measurements of your roll. Make sure you have one solid piece that will wrap around your device with a slight overlap.

Cut your shelf liner in one long piece. You can use a straight edge if you wish.

Step Two:

Grab your fabric. You can use your shelf liner to determine how large a piece you need by laying the liner down about 1/2 inch from one corner.

Cut your fabric leaving a 1/2 inch border larger than your shelf liner. Lay your fabric on top of your shelf liner with the right side up. For non-experienced sewers out there, the right side is the side that you want to be showing (usually the patterned or darker dyed side).

Flip over your pieces and fold your fabric edges to the back of the shelf liner. Use your tape to attach.

Now it's time to start building your duct tape fabric! Stretch long strips of your tape across the shelf liner side of your piece. Cut your strips -- don't tear them, since tearing will look messy. Your strips can hang over the sides slightly. We'll address that in a moment.

Step Six:

Add your self-adhering velcro to your piece. To figure out exactly where you should attach, stick the velcro the top flap, directly in the center near the edge. Keep both sides stuck together. Then, wrap your piece around your iPad once more, carefully adjusting it to where you would like the piece to overlap. Press down firmly and when you pull it apart, your velcro should be right where it needs to be.

Seal up your sides by following your pattern for a seamless look or add another element by taking one of your colors and creating a vertical border. You're the designer, so it's your call.

If you want to get fancy, try cutting bold shapes or going in with a different, contrasting color. We decided to add a little black to make our case a little more "grown up."
