Netflix has found some royals for its upcoming drama The Crown, and the lineup includes former Doctor Matt Smith.

Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor on BBC hit Doctor Who, will play Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh on the series, which is a decades-spanning story centered on Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who helped shape post-war Britain, the network said.

Other announced cast includes Clair Foy, who will play Queen Elizabeth II, and John Lithgow, who will play Sir Winston Churchill.

The Crown, which is written by Peter Morgan, who wrote 2006's The Queen, is inspired by the award-winning West End Play The Audience.

Each season of the series is expected to explore a different chapter of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

Season one, Netflix said, begins as the 25-year-old Princess is "faced with the daunting prospect of leading the most famous monarchy in the world while forging a relationship with the domineering, war-hardened Prime Minister Winston Churchill."

It was first announced back in November 2014 and is expected to premiere in full in 2016.
